Dreadlock Hat part four

The black dreadlocks at the back there are tubes of rolled sinamay.

Dreadlock Hat part three

You can see a little more of the bulk of the hat here. It's really heavy, by the way!

Dreadlock Hat part two

By the way, the dreadlocks are in black with red, purple and white - you can see them on the right there over my shoulder.

Dreadlock Hat part one

Here's a crazy one (that you can't see so well from the front). I had a load of scrap material, yarn dreadlocks I made and some of those plastic scoubidou things, so I made this. I took a few pictures of this one from slightly different angles because it'd be better to see it from the side, but they're a little difficult to take on your own!

Zeppelin Hat part two

The little compartment towards the front there was a real pain. I wanted to glue it on so it would be straight to attach properly and then stitch it on so it wouldn't peel off. I didn't foresee the hours of holding it on while the glue dried. I couldn't find anything strong enough the hold it on properly!

Zeppelin Hat part one

I actually made this one a while ago, but I was trying to get a particular angle with it in the photo, and again took so many pictures that by the time I got one that I thought was ok (or more likely, 'that'll do'), I couldn't smile anymore! But if you can see past that, I thought this one was a very good idea. After I made the body of the zeppelin (the edges of this fabric shred your fingers something awful) I wasn't sure what kind of base to make for it. Maybe it would've been wiser to make the base fit well and then changed the size of the zeppelin, but as you can see, I didn't want to compromise with this one. So it ended up on a tower with four brims.

Tudor(ish) Ruff part three

More interesting angle here. I was wondering if I should do stripes with fabric paint... I decided against it in the end because I wasn't sure how it'd look finished (and I doubt I could do it tidily enough) If I get some good stripey scrap I might do another... Or fur fabric!

Tudor(ish) Ruff part two

Even with a screen on my camera that moves out on an arm, I couldn't see it over my ruff, so none of the pictures I got for this one were that great. In this one my hair isn't arranged as well, but my face looks a little more interesting. Compromise?

Tudor(ish) Ruff part one

For this one I took the pattern for a Tudor ruff and scaled up the amount of material - I used a little bit more than the required length to gather up - I had intended to make it very wide and that would be enough. But then I considered - I could go around it and gather the hem for 50, 60 feet? But I could fold it over and gather it - hiding the hems and giving it more bulk, probably a better finish and... well, make it appropriately over the top for my outfits.

Black and Purple 'Wig' Hat part two

Slightly better view in this one. It had to have something to finish it off at the top, so I went with the clouds in grey and white on here.

Black and Purple 'Wig' Hat part one

Now this one is so monstrous and difficult to keep on properly that I have to hold it up - it won't actually fall off, but it does tend to slump a little. When you can actually see the top, there's a little black shiny tricorn (I think you can only see a corner from here). I'm going to reinforce it with some wire later.

Horned Hat

What do you do when you feel like making something and all you have in the house is a little bit of stiffened netting, some felt and stuffing? This, apparently. It's shaped like a hood at the back and is the same purple as the little 'chain' - but I put my hair in front, and I thought it looked more natural that way. I'm thinking Medusa next?

Red and Black Satin Hat part three

Same again here - bit darker, but I thought it had better contrast and the red was just the right shade.

Red and Black Satin Hat part two

Aha, slightly darker, artier one here. I put my hair up for this one as you can see - I thought it made more of an impact that way. I should point out that I had to take so many pictures for this session (wrong lighting, bad composition, camera in shot) that I didn't end up smiling in any! Excuse me, please.

Red and Black Satin Hat part one

Ok, it's been a while - primarily because I didn't have a good place to take pictures for ages, and I got a new camera to try and figure out the workings of. Here's the first one. Now the trouble with my hats is that when I try and take interesting pictures, particularly here in a mirror, you can't see the whole thing without the camera. The rest of it goes on down the front for about another foot(!) and is stitched together in the middle. I'll take some more pictures of the whole thing later.
